The singing & dancing Sweeps of Mary Poppins bear little resemblance to the reality of the job in Victorian England. Master Sweeps took on apprentices – workhouse boys, or purchased from their parents as young as four – and trained them to climb into hot flues that could be as narrow as 9 inches square! Danger was daily; they could get jammed in the flue, suffocate or burn to death…
